Vietnamese lacquer art (sơn mài) is an ancient craft using the refined resin of the Rhus succedanea tree. Artists apply dozens of layers — each cured for 24 hours — then sand and polish the surface to reveal extraordinary depth, luminosity, and colour. Unlike any other medium, lacquer changes character with light, appearing almost to glow from within.
